General Interest / Research

The Digital Libraries Initiative consisted of six research projects developing new technologies for digital libraries. These were intended to be storehouses of information available through the Internet, funded through a joint initiative of the National Science Foundation (NSF), the Department of Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (ARPA), and the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA).

The projects' focus was to dramatically advance the means to collect, store, and organize information in digital forms, and make it available for searching, retrieval, and processing via communication networks -- all in user-friendly ways. The project continues at University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (UIUC) as DeLIver, a system accessible to faculty and students.
