Important note: The producers of this CD wish you success in your pursuit of lifelong learning. Our work combines NASA content with emerging technologies to provide pilot efforts, experiments and concept tests. In the spirit of eNASA and public access, the following data is being made available to you at no cost. The information below is the best that was available at the time of production (May 2001).

Most of these projects are active and many have leveraged their initial funding to expand and enhance their offerings. Some are now funded by others, some have been completed or archived and others lead to dry wells or dead ends ...such is the nature of trial and error research. We present this information and these links intact for any educational activity you choose to pursue.

General Interest / Research:

Affordable Networking Technologies for K-12 Classrooms — This pilot project was one of the first of it’s type that allowed schools to cache and share data over low speed networks. Target Grades: General Interest / Research Web Access: http://learn.arc.nasa.gov/products/products98/k12/larc_ant.html

The Alexandria Digital Library Project — This was an Inter-Agency collaboration between NSF, the University of California, Santa Barbara and elements of the NASA Learning Technologies Project. It continues as a working digital library with collections of geographically referenced materials and services for accessing those collections. Bay Area Digital GeoResource — BADGER is an online visualization system for geographic data of the Environmental features, underground services, property lines, municipal zones, census data, and demographic information of the San Francisco Bay Area. Digital Libraries Initiative - The Digital Libraries Initiative consisted of six research projects developing new technologies for digital libraries. EARTH UPDATE — This is an interactive, real-time display system of Earth images and data designed for Museums and Schools and available to the general public as a "museum in a case"! Target Grades: General Interest / research Web Access: http://earth.rice.edu/connected/earthupdate.html

ForNet - By using Internet technology, ForNet helped forest managers contribute to (by locating usable timber and land, for instance) and sensibly manage (by closely monitoring ecosystems) urban growth. It included a system that allowed users to browse large raster data sets and a capability that mapped based on GIS info. The project remains have been integrated into other UMN activities. Informedia — This Inter-Agency Digital Library Project at CMU provided research on automated video and audio indexing, navigation, visualization, search, and retrieval and embedded them into a system for use in education, information, and entertainment environments. LDAPS - the Lego Data Acquisition and Prototyping System project—or LDAPS, for short—is dedicated to introducing engineering into K-14 education. By taking advantage of a child's tendency to build and create, LDAPS combines LEGO Dacta building blocks with engineering challenges into methodology as the project develops curricula and hardware and software extensions to enhance learning. OBSERVATORIUM — The NASA Observatorium site combines years of NASA exploration and discovery with the latest web technology. All your NASA favorites are here. Mars information. Earth and space photos. The space shuttle. The Hubble Space Telescope. Planets. Comets. Black holes. Eclipses...a body of knowledge as vast and varied as the universe itself. Project Horizon - The project's primary goals were to develop easy-to-use, scalable digital library technologies for the public to locate, integrate, move, and analyze Earth and space science data via the Internet. Target Grades: General Interest / Research Web Access: http://www.atmos.uiuc.edu/

Project SPACE - The S.P.A.C.E. in Project SPACE is an acronym standing for Sun, Planets, Asteroids, Comets, Exploration. You’ll find many images and other materials here. Target Grades: K, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12. Web Access: http://projectspace.arc.nasa.gov

QUEST - Sharing is what NASA Quest is all about. Quest is a full suite of online resources that allows students to share in authentic NASA pursuits like flying the space shuttle, spacecraft exploration of distant planets, and space-based life sciences research. Or tune into web casts from the Learning Technologies Channel, a web site that lets you participate in online courses and remotely attend NASA workshops and seminars. Remote Webcasting Technology — The project uses a number of communications capabilities to provide science information from around the world. From Artic Icebreakers Australian observatories to Southwestern farm fields, we can webcast it all. Target Grades: General Interest / Research. SENTAR Emergency Management Operation Tool — This tool allowed access to satellite images and text files, local data, and local applications. Stanford Digital Library Initiative — This Inter-Agency project was intended to provide collaborative tools for science information. Target Grades: General Interest / Research Web Access: http://www-diglib.stanford.edu/

UC Berkeley Digital Library Project - Began as an Inter-Agency, Academic teaming to research collaboration techniques. It continues today and is currently developing the tools and technologies to support highly improved models of the "scholarly information life cycle." Target Grades: General Interest / Research. Virtually Hawaii - Virtually Hawaii was a large collection of satellite, aircraft, and ground images of Hawaii. This well-designed, visually stunning site offered near-real-time weather satellite images, live video from two islands, and interactive QuickTime panoramas and games. WeatherNet4 - WeatherNet4 has proven that the television meteorologist/weathercaster is indeed a "science ambassador," ready to deliver Earth and space science information daily to those watching television.
