Saturn

View Saturn in Celestia

Saturn is the second largest
Planet circling our huge Sun
What planet is bigger than Saturn?
Jupiter is the only one!

Saturn is such a beautiful planet
Remarkable for many things
Saturn has over 31 moons
And more than seven separate rings

These lovely rings of Saturn
Are pieces of rock and ice
Some bigger than buildings
Others smaller than mice

These seven rings
Although very distinct
Are also well aligned
And joined into just one layer
A layer over which you can glide

This layer is so incredibly thin
About 2 soccer fields
From top to bottom side
And yet it’s way over
80 thousand kilometers wide
(That’s 800,000 soccer fields
for you Einsteins)

You might say
That is too weird
I do not understand
Can you describe that for me
These outer space dimensions
Are so very confusing
I'm just a little human
Standing tall on this land

Well, imagine something
As thin as a dime
Stretching four soccer fields wide
Though it may appear
As thin as a sail
Scientists see it every time

Of Saturn’s many moons
The most famous one is Titon
Don’t confuse Titon with Triton
A moon of Saturn’s neighbor, Neptune

Winds near Saturn’s equator
Cycle through its very long year
Going faster than the speed of sound
Ten times faster than hurricanes here

Saturn’s made mostly of hydrogen (~90%)
With helium thrown into the fold (~10%)
So it’s mostly these gases
PLUS traces of sulfur
That makes Saturn’s beautiful bands
Of lovely red, yellow and gold
