Earth Challenge: 1
|
|
If the Earth were a ball and the Sun a basket,
how many Earth balls would fill the Sun? (You will need to pretend they
are soft squishy balls that would squeeze into all the empty space)
|
First calculate the volume for the Sun, then calculate the volume
for the Earth, then divide the Sun volume by the Earth volume. This should
show give you a sense of just how big the Sun is compared to Earth.
Bonus Challenges
- Now that you know how this game is played, just for fun you
might want to find out how many Moon’s it would take to fill an Earth-sized
basket!
- If you are really industrious, think about the distance from
Earth to the Sun, which is 150,000,000 kilometers. How many Earths could
you fit between here and there? Don’t forget you now need to think
in diameters! How many years would it take you to drive to the Sun at the
typical highway speed limit of 100 km/hour?
- The Moon is 384,401 kilometers away from Earth. How many
Earth could you fit between here and there?
