Project Horizon

Project Horizon, a cooperative agreement between NASA and the University of Illinois, seeks to enhance digital library technology, especially Web client and server technology, in support of better public access to Earth and space science data.

Project Horizon's two testbed servers, one for Earth and one for space science data, provide working, real-world applications to thoroughly test and demonstrate this technology.

The project's primary goals are to develop easy-to-use, scalable digital library technologies for the public to locate, integrate, move, and analyze Earth and space science data via the Internet.

Project Horizon's online activities include technology development (including client, server, and testbed technologies), basic research methods (through science data access and information systems), and testbed science information servers (for both Earth and space science). Its Web site includes links to related sites and products, too.

Project Horizon activities integrate and extend existing research, development, and discipline-specific activities at NCSA, and the University of Illinois departments of astronomy, atmospheric sciences, computer science, and library and information science.

Many of these activities are centered around rapidly evolving Web technology, including Java and VRML.
