Virtually Hawaii is a large collection of satellite, aircraft, and ground images of Hawaii. This well-designed, visually stunning site offers near-real-time weather satellite images, live video from two islands, and interactive QuickTime panoramas and games.
Virtually Hawaii has been one of the most popular sites on the Web, and it's easy to see why.
The site's primary target audience is tourists who are planning to visit Hawaii and interested laypersons who want to know more about the islands and remote sensing. Other site visitors include K-12 students writing papers, undergraduates using the data for research projects, and local industries and state offices who draw upon the wall-to-wall satellite coverage of the islands to study numerous areas and features.
Special sections, such as Virtual Field Trips, allow visitors to travel to many different places in Hawaii, simply by pointing-and-clicking. Virtually Hawaii also features quizzes that challenge visitors, and includes a guest book for visitor feedback.
Virtually Hawaii is one of several Internet projects funded by NASA's Learning Technologies Project (LTP), which is part of the High Performance Computing and Communications (HPCC) initiative. Virtually Hawaii is managed through the Hawaii Space Grant Consortium, University of Hawaii at Manoa. Virtually Hawaii is brought to you by researchers at the University of Hawaii, Proxemy Research, Inc., Terra Systems, Inc., Hawaii, and private company sponsors.
